Before entering politics, Steven was the chief executive of a fully listed company on the London Stock Exchange, specialising in international pipelines. And then became a Director and Spokesman, as Head of Policy at the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, standing up for businesses across Calderdale. Steven received an MBE for his services to small businesses and the economy of Yorkshire. 

Steven was elected to serve the residents of Ryburn in 2018, and re-elected in 2022. In his first year, Steven was appointed Chair of the influential Place Scrutiny Board, and elected leader of the Conservative Group in January 2020.
